Fond du Lac, WI (WHBL/KFIZ) -  The bank robbery suspect killed in a shootout with a state trooper in Fond du Lac last evening murdered two people in the course of the day. The suspect shot and killed a man in his sixties in Marinette County while he was looking for a getaway vehicle after a bank robbery in the Village of Wausaukee yesterday afternoon.

He’s also responsible for the shooting death of the state trooper, whose returned gunfire killed the suspect.

The Facebook page for the Wisconsin Professional Police Association confirms the identity of the slain State Trooper. The posting says in part, “Yesterday marked the End of Watch for Wisconsin State Trooper Trevor Casper.” Another posting on the social networking site refers to Casper and his sacrifice in the shootout with the bank robbery suspect.

This marks the first law enforcement death in the line of duty in Fond du Lac since Police Officer Craig Birkholz was shot and killed in a standoff four years ago this month.

Fond du Lac residents were worried about their love ones while last evening’s tragic shootout between a state trooper and bank robbery suspect unfolded. The suspect fled on foot after abandoning his car near the Pick ‘N Save store on West Johnson Street in Fond du Lac. It rattled nearby apartment dwellers. Nick Cleveland was concerned about his mother who had been in ill health. He had been in contact with her by phone while police kept the public away from the area. He said she heard gun shots and there were holes in her bedroom window.
