SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - Both the Sheboygan Police Department and the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department is ready to host their annual citizen academies next month, and spots are still available.

Sheriff's Lieutenant Jim Gottsacker says the popular program is a way for local residents to learn how their deputies do their job.  "They go through a lot of the things that new officers get in training and stuff like that; so defense and arrest tactics, firearm, vehicle contact; so just a real wide variety of things," says Gottsacker.

Sergeant Dave Anderson says participants will learn about all aspects of an officer’s job.  "They’ll learn about neighborhood policing, the environment, crime prevention, criminal investigation, and service of investigations," says Anderson.  "They’ll learn about traffic enforcement, including OWI and high risk/low risk traffic stops."

Other parts of the academy include learning about the hiring process, the court system, and hands on demonstration.

Registration forms can be found online at the departments' websites, and must be turned in by Friday.
