PLYMOUTH, WI (WHBL) - The Plymouth Police Department is raising funds to support a new K-9 unit.

Lt. Jason Schmelter says the unit will help with drug-related incidents in western Sheboygan County, which has been on the increase in recent years.  "We’ve had in this portion of the county several drug overdoses, a couple of which even resulted in fatalities," says Schmelter.  "So we’re looking for another tool to combat that problem."

The department is asking for donations from individuals, groups and businesses to help pay to 60-thousand dollar cost for the animal and equipment. That does include an online collection on the "Go-Fund-Me" website, which had over $1,400 after four days.  "In addition, we’re looking at possibly some community activities, possibly like a dog agility trial," says Schmelter.

The goal is to have the unit in operation by the end of the year.
