Vandersteen focusing on increasing downtown housing options

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan Mayor Mike Vandersteen says the city has a growing problem - not enough housing in the downtown.

Vandersteen points to a recent study that showed very low vacancy rates for current market rate apartments and houses, along with hearing from businesses that have young Millennial employees living as far away as Cedarburg and Grafton because they can’t find housing locally.

In response, Vandersteen says the city has been in contact with developers to come up with plans for new living spaces in the downtown.  One proposal in the works would be on Eighth Street just north of the bridge that could break ground this year, but others are being considered.

You can listen to the mayor's comments with the audio file above.
