SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Joe Leibham has left the state Senate one month early.  The outgoing 9th District senator announced in a press release Monday he will resign due to state law regulations as he considers future employment opportunities.

Leibham has been in the state Senate the past 12 years, but choose not to run for re-election this fall to pursue Tom Petri’s U.S. House seat and lost in a primary to Glenn Grothman.

Leibham says the district office will continue to serve constituents for the remainder of the current session and is preparing for new senator Devin LeMahieu to take over in January.

In his press release, Leibham says he was proud of his work in the state Legislature, which includes four years in the Assembly.  In addition to passing bills and budgets, Leibham says he is also greatful for the opportunity to assist thousands of people he served, plus having the chance to meet his wife.

As for his future, Leibham's statement did not divulge what future job he would take or if he would seek another government office later in life.  It only says he would remain an active and involved citizen.
