SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The first of six new houses on the 1000 block of Erie Avenue in Sheboygan broke ground Wednesday.  The homes are part of a joint effort between the city, the Gateway Neighborhood Association, and Habitat for Humanity-Lakeside to develop the Erie Avenue corridor.

Habitat President Carol Dussault said they have been dreaming about having a chance to contribute to the city and partner families a beautiful new neighborhood, filled with responsible, hard working families.

So far, seven homes have been demolished on the block with more in the near future to make room for the new houses.

City Director of Planning and Development Chad Pelishek said this event is the next step to complete a vision put forward in 2001.  The plan is to continue developing the corridor between 9th and 14th Street with design standards for homes both old and new, and a Rent to Own initiative to give people a program that could lead to home ownership in the future.
