SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan County will soon be the owner of the Amsterdam Dunes in the Town of Holland. County Board Supervisors unanimously approved Tuesday purchasing the 333 acres of land east of Cedar Grove for $4.2 million. The county plans to use the land to preserve some of the last undeveloped beach front along Lake Michigan in southern Wisconsin, while also setting up a wetland mitigation bank to assist public and private entities with future expansion.
The county did try to purchase the land back in 2008, but the price was too much to take on at the time. County Administrator Adam Payne said it has been a large collaborative effort to get this land purchase completed since the latest opportunity came up over six months ago. He added there has been nothing but support for this action from local residents to state and federal officials.
