SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - It looks like the people of Sheboygan will decide the future of the office of city attorney. The city council, meeting Wednesday night as a Committee of the Whole, endorsed the idea of a binding referendum in November which would ask if the office of city attorney should remain elected or should become appointed. Alderperson Mary Lynn Donahue initiated the discussion after learning that the office hadn’t been contested in 49 years. She said by making the job an appointed position "we have the ability to make sure the person who is sitting here is the very best, the most skilled, and the best suited for the position." The recommendation to hold the referendum will go to the council when it meets on July 7th. Donahue said it won’t be the first time. She said the city council voted in 1974 to make the position appointed, but that was overturned by voters in a subsequent referendum. She said the same scenario occurred in 1980.
