SASD delays vote on future for long term care benefits

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The Sheboygan Area School District has delayed action for a few months on the future of long term care benefits for past and current teachers.

The Board of Education was prepared to vote Tuesday evening to end their contribution to the WEA trust for the benefit by August 1.  Business Administrator Mark Boehlke  said the decision was due to recent and future high rate increases towards it, which are expected to average out to be 9.5 percent a year.

Several dozen retired and current teachers attended the meeting with over a dozen speaking about the impact ending the benefit would have.  Many were unhappy with how the district has handled communicating with them about the potential benefit cut, along with the struggles of finding a new benefit provider and how to pay for the added costs, saying they just need more time to prepare for a possible change.

As a result, the board approved having the administration hold meetings with current and retired teachers about the matter over the next several weeks, with a final recommendation to be decided on in August.
