SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The city of Sheboygan is continuing to aggressively work on implementing parts of the downtown Master Plan which was unveiled last month.  The city council Monday night reviewed a development agreement for construction of a 30-unit apartment building on city-owned property on 8th Street and sent it to the Finance Committee for further study.

Mayor Mike Vandersteen, on Sheboygan’s Morning News, said the city acquired the property which formerly housed the St. Cyril and Methodius convent and a Tri-Par station for $105,000 and plans to sell it to the developer for ten dollars.  He said the city needs to take actions like this at times in order to spur development.

Vandersteen said if the plans go through, that building will add 2.5-million dollars to the city’s tax base.  He adds it could also make other parts of the master plan feasible, such as building a grocery story in the downtown area.

The proposal will come back to the city council for final approval when it meets in two weeks.
