SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Students at Farnsworth Middle School in Sheboygan conducted a book drive in December that had over 700 books donated to students at Longfellow Elementary in Sheboygan.

7th Grade teacher Sara Opgenorth says the idea came from coming up with a service project for students to do.  "We decided to all work together, and we decided it would be fun to hold a book drive," said Opgenorth.  "And since Longfellow is a feeder school and many of our Farnsworth students have connections to that school we thought that would be a great place to donate our books."

The books were donated in early January.  "They had these huge smiles on their faces, and they held up these little signs, like each of them had a letter and it said ‘thanks for the books’," says Farnsworth student Melissa Wierman who was on site for the presentation.

Longfellow Principal Karl Bekkum says the projects helps students not only with reading, but learn more about the middle school most will attend.  "So they got a chance to see not only the books that they receive now but opportunities that they have as they get older in the school to donate back to the community," said Bekkum.

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - Open enrollment for public school districts begins today as families can apply through April 30th what district they want to send their kids to.  Districts are doing their part to promote their schools.

Sheboygan Falls Superintendent Lisa Born says they have changed their website and do some advertising in local media  "We have found that word of mouth and having conversations with families when they come in, if they want to tour our buildings, is probably one of the better ways to connect families with our schools," says Born.

Oostburg Superintendent Kevin Bruggink says they had a video on their website that students made promoting the district’s strengths.  "Our unique size; being small enough to know each student but large enough that we have pretty diverse offerings, also talks about the balance of our tradition and our heritage but still being pretty progressive," says Bruggink.

More information about signing up for open enrollment can be found at the Department of Public Instructions website dpi.wi.gov.

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - An area domestic abuse support group needs more physical help from the public.

Safe Harbor, Sheboygan County’s domestic abuse shelter, has had plenty of donations of money and supplies to help those coping with the affects of sexual assault.  But Rachel Seil says they are in need of people’s time as well.

Some duties focus on upkeep with their shelter on Niagara Avenue.  "Helping sort out donations or stocking the food pantry or, you know, helping organize the clothing closets.  You know, those kind of things," says Seil. Also available are opportunities to interact with victims and survivors over the phone and in person, plus helping with children care.

Seil says commitments to volunteer opportunities do vary, with some lasting up to a year.

You can contact Safe Harbor to learn more at 452-8611.

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Local police scanner enthusiasts are growing in popularity for listening to and then posting police and fire related incidents on social media.  One of those enthusiasts is Mitchell Tempas, who has been posting on Twitter for the last five years under the handle Sheboygan Night Scanner.

Tempas tells WHBL News it all began when his grandmother gave him a scanner and he became hooked with what he heard.  After following another person who posts on Twitter for what is heard on the scanner during the day, Tempas decided to cover the night time since he is on disability due to his difficulties going to sleep at night.

Tempas has grown his hobby to three scanners that cover a thousand channels 24-7 so that he does not miss anyone talking.  His popularity in the public grew after he forgot to make his page private, leading to over ten thousand likes.  Tempas hopes to continue growing, which could means covering all scanner traffic in Wisconsin.

Sheboygan County Sheriff Lieutenant John Detienne says the departmetn has seen Tempas out at incidents, but has had no difficulties with him.

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - Conditions are much better Monday than they were Sunday after the first significant snow storm to hit our area of the state.

The National Weather Service office in Sullivan says locations across the county saw between six and eight inches, with Cedar Grove receiving the most with nine.  Strong winds were also a major factor Sunday, leading to blowing and drifting and near white out conditions at times.

As for accidents during Sunday’s snow storm, local law enforcement agencies say there were a number of slide-offs or vehicles in the ditch during the height of the storm, but those have lessen thanks to road crews getting out to clear roadways.

BOSTON, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan’s mayor will not be at Monday evening’s city council meeting due to the weather in the Boston area.

We told you last week Mike Vandersteen was visiting family and had a front road seat when the northeast U.S. was hit by a major snow storm.  Unfortunately, he will have to spend more time there than he originally planned due to the domino effect of flight delays and feeling the impacts of the same storm system that hit our area Sunday.  The Boston area is forecast to get up to a foot of snow, falling at a rate of two to three inches at times.

As for now, Vandersteen is scheduled to fly out of the Boston area Tuesday afternoon.

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan’s Common Council is looking at possibly reducing its size from its current 16 alderpersons.  A resolution that would have cut the council to 8, eliminating one alderperson per district by 2018, was sent back to committee Monday.

Council Vice President Darryl Carlson says a substitute ordinance will be created.  "We’re going to look at a different number other than just cutting it in half, and we just need to put a little more time into how it’s going to work," says Carlson.

Any reduction requiring a change in district sizes it will most likely have to wait until after the 2020 Census when redistricting is allowed.

Sheboygan County officials keeping an eye on measles

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan County’s Health and Human Services Department is being proactive when it comes to the measles.

Nursing Program Supervisor Jean Beinemann says they are educating those who have kids in schools and/or child care about the outbreak that has grown to over 100 cases nationwide.  They also know who is most at risk for the disease.  "The schools and day cares do a very good job of monitoring vaccination histories, so we’re feeling pretty good about that," says Beinemann.

State laws require kids to be vaccinated, but parents can get waivers for kids due to personal beliefs. Beinemann says the numbers of those people is very low.  "So in the event that we do see any disease activity in those schools, those individuals will need to stay out of school until the outbreak would be over," says Beinemann.

So far no measles cases have been reported in Wisconsin.

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - A growing number of churches in Sheboygan County are joining Love INC, Love in the Name of Christ.  On "Sheboygan's Morning News" Tuesday, Pastor Ric Olson says the group of over two dozen churches will focus on helping those who are trying to break out of the cycle of poverty.  "The partner churches supply volunteers who get training on how to do the phone center, the intake interviews, and then other volunteers that follow up with being able to provide for a relationship with the person in need," says Olson.

Group member Linda Cates says the group will tackle the needs of the community that churches have been dealing with.  "We had known going into it of the generational poverty and cycle of hopelessness, which is really what are intentions to break for those who see some possibility for themselves, some hope," says Cates.

A celebration event will be held February 17th at Breaking Break, which is open to anyone interested in the group.  Reservations are required, and those interested can contact Katie Popp at 920-783-6701.  A website is being created for the group, loveincsheboygancounty.org.

PLYMOUTH, WI (WHBL) - The only ski hill in Sheboygan County remains closed, which it has been for the winter season so far.

Nutt Hill in Plymouth relies solely on Mother Nature for snow, and City Management Assistant Tanya Williamson says Sunday’s snowfall was not enough.  "We need a ten inch base before we can let kids ski up there…it isn’t quite ten inches," says Williamson

Williamson says those looking for an activity can enjoy skating on Mill Pond, with its shack on the pond’s east side.  "There’s free skates to use; you don’t have to pay to rent them.  It’s warm, it’s heated.  You can put your skates on inside the building, and then there’s a track that leads down to the ice and it’s smoothed and straighten regularly"

More information on the hill and skating can be found on the city’s website. ciplywi.com

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - A-A-R-P Wisconsin has found some people may not be properly prepared financially for retirement, thinking they can live on Social Security alone.

Advocacy Director Helen Marks Dicks says a recent survey found those who can supplement their savings and the around 15-thousand dollars a year Social Security provides are in the minority.  "59-percent of folks in Wisconsin don’t have access to a pension plan," says Marks Dicks.  "42-percent of people who work don’t have access to any kind of retirement savings plan at all."

Marks Dicks says her group is looking to set up a retirement savings plan that mirrors what public sector employees have but would be open to anyone.  "And that would be self sustaining with no cost to the taxpayers," says Marks Dicks.

A-A-R-P Wisconsin has calculators on their website to help people plan properly for retirement.  Those can be found at aarp.org/wi and clicking on the 'Tools' link.
