SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - Fire breaks out at the Nemak Plant on Gateway Drive in Sheboygan early Tuesday morning.  Battalion Fire Chief Keith Risse says they got a 911 call just after 2am that there was a furnace malfunction which caused the fire to escape the equipment and spread.  The fire quickly made it to the roof of the building.  Firefighters and plant personnel worked to knock down the flames, but had a tough time using water because of the molten metal in the area.  Snow, wind, and cold temperatures also made firefighting operations difficult as they were dealing with the roof.  There's significant damage to the roof area - though the good news is nobody was injured.

BEAVER DAM, WI (WTAQ) - A controlled detonation has taken place at a Beaver Dam apartment complex.

A Monday explosion at the facility killed one man.

Police say there were still 'highly volatile' homemade explosives in the building.

Those explosives were reportedly sensitive enough that they could not be handled or removed from the apartment.

Police Chief John Kreuziger says "the operation was a success in eliminating the threatening explosive material."

The detonation has caused additional damage to the complex, but FBI Special Agent Justin Tolomeo says it could've been worse.

"Insofar as we could protect those surrounding residences, that was a success."

While the body had not been identified at last word, Tolomeo notes it has been removed from the apartment.

"Information and evidence was obtained prior to the detonation, and we're assessing that currently."

Investigators from the local, state, and federal levels continue to look into why the man possessed such a large amount of explosives.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - A plea hearing is scheduled for Monday for a woman charged with abusing her 3 children last September.  27 year old Shiquita Perry is facing 4 felony charges of child abuse after one of her children reported the beatings to her school in Sheboygan.  Court documents say the 12 year old went to her principal, saying she was tired of “getting whooped” with a whooping stick… She told detectives that while her mother was away, she went to a restaurant in Sheboygan to get her younger siblings supper.  When Perry found out about this, she grabbed a closet rod and started beating her, and her siblings, who were 4 and 5 years old.

The criminal complaint says the beatings happened on more than one occasion - and the beatings were so bad, that, on one occasion, Perry kept the children home from school so nobody would see the bruises.  The girl said that one of the "whoopings" was so bad that she fell to the ground, and Perry continued beating her with a clothes hanger. Perry, however, claims she only punished the children by spanking them.. She’s facing 3 years in prison on each charge if she’s found guilty.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - Students from across the country prepare to walk out of class at 10:00 Wednesday morning to remember the students who died when Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.  In Sheboygan, Superintendent Joe Sheehan says they haven’t heard of any organized plans in the district for a walk out. Sheehan says while they discuss the issue with student leaders, there’s been talk about possibly holding hands around a flag pole or writing letters of support to families.  He says any event would focus more on remembering the victims of that shooting, and less on any political statements.

District leaders say that if students do get up and walk out during that time, they need to have permission from parents that they’re allowed to be absent from class - and if they do leave, they need to find a way to make up the time that was lost.

Sheehan tells WHBL that he’s spoken with other Administrators throughout Sheboygan County, and he says that none of the other districts are anticipating walk outs.
