SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The trial of an Oshkosh man in the fatal stabbing of a Sheboygan man last January got underway Monday in Shebogyan County Court. 23 year old Michael Lemerande is on trial for 2nd Degree Reckless Homicide in the death of 41 year old Nicholas Lerhke who was fatally stabbed during an altercation on South 12th Street. A jury of 7 women and 7 men, including two alternates, was selected Monday morning. Defense Attorney Marcus Falk told the jury in his opening statements that this is a "clear case of self defense". He said Lemerande stabbed Lehrke to protect a friend who was being beaten by Lehrke during the altercation. Assistant District Attorney Nathan Haberman said he intends to prove that Lemerande had other alternatives and this is a clear case of reckless homicide. The trial before Judge James Bolgert is expected to last into Friday.
