SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - One of the senators who voted in a state committee this week to allow Gogebic Taconite access to around 3,500 acres in northern Wisconsin with little public interference was area Senator Glenn Grothman.
On Sheboygan’s Morning News Friday, Grothman said it was necessary to protect those who are researching a possible iron ore mine from protestors, including those assisting G-Tac such as the DNR and private firms.
One sticking point was that the area in question is part of the state’s Managed Forest Land; private land open to public use for recreation. Grothman said the proposal would have G-Tac offset the tax break the land owners would get from the state for the added privacy when they need it. The company will let hunters know when they can access the land.
Grothman is hoping the full Senate will vote on this matter later this month.
