SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) -  A former employee of the Random Lake School District has been charged for stealing hundreds of tablets intended for student use.  33-year-old Mark Ustby of Milwaukee made his initial appearance in Sheboygan County Court Thursday for two counts of theft.

According to the criminal complaint, Superintendent Tom Malmstadt said Ustby, who was in charge of the technology in the school, abruptly resigned on August 28.  One day later, he discovered around 300 computer tablets and one laptop were missing.

When authorities asked Ustby about the missing items, he allegedly admitted to taking these and dozens of other tablets, most bought by the school and others donated by a business in the Village of Random Lake, and sold them on Craigslist so that he could support several people he described as worse off them him.  The total tablets stolen are at least 500, worth around 180 thousand dollars.

Ustby is free on a cash bond and will be back in court for a preliminary hearing September 11.
