SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - School is starting across the area and that means drivers need to once again be on the lookout for kids.
Captain Jim Veeser says that school zones are where drivers especially need to pay attention and slow down. The speed limits that are posted need to be followed wherever kids are present, even in major thoroughfares. He says people also need to respect crossing guards. "Slow down, and when they have the stop sign up, stop. It's not an opportunity to get through that area quicker, it's time to slow down." Failure to yield could not only cost you several hundred dollars in fines, but also harm a child.
Veeser also reminds drivers that passing a bus that's stopped for kids is highly dangerous. "It's very unsafe because you don't know what a child's going to do. They might understand they have to go to one area, but what if they go out into the street? You have to be prepared."
Teens are also getting ready to head out on the roads to get to school, and parents should be enforcing safety tips with their kids. Veeser says that includes slowing down, buckling up, and making sure to put away their cell phones while they're behind the wheel.
