SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - A case of tuberculosis has turned up in Sheboygan South High School and parents and students are being notified by letter. School and Sheboygan Public Health officials held a news conference this afternoon and said the case was discovered after a family member was diagnosed last week. They said the student has been excluded from school and will remain in isolation until no longer infectious. Sharon Daun, District School Nurse Supervisor, said the student was in a special class and did not move from class to class, so they feel only about a dozen students were in close contact. She said affected students are being notified by letter and phone call and will be offered free testing and treatment. Daun said if any of those students test positive, the testing will be expanded. Officials said there have been up to 3 cases of TB per year identified in Sheboygan County, but additional measures need to be taken when it involves a school age person. They said TB is spread through the air, not hand to hand or from touching surfaces like computers or tabletops. It takes close and continued contact to spread the disease…usually within six feet for more than 8 hours.
