SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The Sheboygan County Humane Society is looking to help neuter and spay feral and community cats on the city's south side.

The program is part of a grant from the ASPCA, and executive director Leah Helms says the process is pretty simple once the cat is brought in. "We spay and neuter them, their left ear is tipped so if they're ever trapped or if you ever see a cat that's missing the top triangle of their left ear, leave them there, they've already been altered."

Helms say the trap, neuter and release program is the best way to control the population of community cats, because simply taking them out of the area will prompt more cats to be born. "It makes them better community members, it makes them healthier because they've been vaccinated, and it provides the community ease to know that the population will be going down, it just takes a while because they have to be spayed and neutered first." The program pays for the shots and the neutering, and all that residents have to do is get the traps from the Humane Society and bring the cats in for the program.

The program currently services Sheboygan south of Washington Avenue but Helms says they're hoping to expand it. "The goal is once we can get cats done in that area, I can apply for more grants so we can show that this is effective, and I want to move north within Sheboygan."
