SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders used his time at Sheboygan South High School to attack Governor Walker, Act 10 and Wisconsin's new voting laws.
Sanders came out firing at Donald Trump, but quickly turned his sights on Governor Walker and Wisconsin Republicans. Sanders says Governor Walker's efforts to implement voter ID are against the very idea of democracy. "The idea that in your state, under Governor Walker, we're seeing massive efforts to make it harder for people to vote, is absolutely wrong and unacceptable." He says that we should be encouraging more votes and more ideas in the Government and not fewer.
The Senator also called out Walker for the damage that Act 10 and other anti-union laws have done to the State. He says he'll fight to empower unions if elected. "I believe that a strong and growing trade union movement not only effectively protects its own members, but driving up wages will drive up wages for all Americans." Sanders says that if the states want to suppress their citizens, they aren't doing their jobs. "So I say to Scott Walker and I say to other governors in this country, if you are afraid of free and fair and open elections, get out of politics, get out of the job!"
Sanders also called for the end of what he calls the 'rigged economy' where the wealthiest Americans continue to grow their wealth while people working full time jobs can't make a living wage. He also says that the big banks that helped cause the Great Recession ought to pay their fair share after they got bailed out by the American people.
Sanders is the first national candidate to make a stop in Sheboygan this year. He continues his campaign with an event tonight in Green Bay. He's also got appearances scheduled in Wausau, Eau Claire, Madison and Milwaukee.
