SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The first of two community input meetings on the closing of Washington School is scheduled for Tuesday night. It will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Urban Middle School auditorium. The district administration has recommended closing the school at the end of the year and sending most of the 350 students to Grant and Jefferson next year. The plan drew opposition from parents and others at a special meeting last month. The administration says it’s too expensive to renovate the 100 year old Washington School and there is no need to spend 12-million dollars, or more, to build a new school because there is room for the students in the other buildings. Another input session is set for Wednesday night from 6 to 8 at Urban. A final decision on the closing is expected when the School Board meets on April 9th.
