SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - The city of Sheboygan has a 2013 budget, but there is still the threat of a veto. The city council, at full strength Wednesday night, took up the 36-million dollar budget for the second time and quickly approved it, 12 to 4. Aldermen Dekker, Lewandowksi, Van Akkeren and Matichek voted “no." The budget contains the garbage collection fee, which Mayor Terry Van Akkeren has vowed to get rid of. But the 12 votes are enough to override a veto. Van Akkeren said he will make a decision Thursday on a veto. Finance Chair Don Hammond has said the fee is needed to properly balance the budget. He said it's not a perfect budget, but it's a good budget. The budget is up by about $600,000, but next year’s property tax rate will stay the same. Final figures on the tax rate won’t be available until next week The tax rate last year with all the components totaled $24.65 per thousand.
