SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - No injuries were reported due to a house fire on Indiana Avenue in Sheboygan Tuesday evening.

Sheboygan Fire Department Battalion Chief Keith Risse says the initial call came in just before 6:45 p.m. at 1427 Indiana Avenue.  When firefighters arrived, they noticed the structure was covered in a heavy blanket of smoke due to a fire on the second story.  The intense heat and smoke from the fire kept firefighters from fighting the fire from the inside, resulting in an exterior attack.

Risse says Sheboygan firefighters were assisted by units from Kohler and Black River, and remained on the scene for over four hours until it was ruled extinguished. “It was contained to the fire building itself.  We had a very small amount of involvement to the house directly to the east of the fire building.  That house was located within about four feet from the fire building, so we’re pleased to report very, very slight damage to that house.”

Risse adds the good news is the four people inside the building when the fire call came in got out safety, resulting in no injuries to the public or firefighters.  "There were three apartment units in the building, so four people were displaced.  And they were helped at the scene by the American Red Cross."

Traffic along Indiana Avenue was restricted for hours to give fire crews space to battle the blaze.  Damage is estimated at over 100-thousand dollars to the building and content inside.

An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
