SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The return of an arctic blast of air to our area has Sheboygan Police warning people of being safe both on the road and of a possible scam.
The department warned people Sunday night that roads may be slippery due to ice build up from the rapid drop in temperatures Sunday. Salt typically does not work the best when temperatures are as cold as they are, so they advise people to drive slower and allow for extra distance to stop. They warn intersections could be particularly slick, where several property damage accidents occurred throughout the day Sunday.
The department is also warning of a scam that has become popular in the past several winters.
The scam typically has two people coming to the door of a homeowner, particularly those with elderly residents, claiming to be from a local utility company and ask to come in to do an inspection associated with the cold weather. Once the people are allowed in, one will stay with the homeowner while the other will go around the house and steal items of value.
The department says so far this year, this scam has occurred in the Manitowoc and Fox Valley area, but not in Sheboygan.
They add anyone with suspicions of people claiming to be from a utility should ask them for identification and contact the utility to verify their workers were sent to that area.
