SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan Police are asking residents to keep an eye out for BB guns following a number of incidents involving them in the city in recent months.
The department says there have been thefts of this weapon from local retailers, and damage to property and injuries to people due to its use. There was also the incident last month at Longfellow Elementary where a BB gun was brought to the school.
Several arrests have been made, but more is needed to be done to reduce the number of cases involving this item. The department adds using a BB gun in the wrong place could also raise the possibility of having an officer mistake the weapon for a real firearm and it could create a dangerous situation.
Police are recommending to parents of children with BB guns to closely scrutinize how and where they are being used. Also, parents are asked to watch for BB guns or items related to their use, such as a CO2 container or pellets, in case their child has gotten one without their permission. Finally, the department says watch out for any suspicious activities, and to report them to law enforcement immediately.
