Sheboygan County, WI (WHBL) – 24-year-old Desmond A. Robinson of Milwaukee may have to spend his 25th birthday in the county lockup if he is convicted for leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase-at speeds of up to 120 mph.
It all began last Friday, October 23, 2015, when a Manitowoc deputy spotted a stolen vehicle traveling south on Interstate 43 towards Sheboygan. The deputy followed the blue Chrysler Aspen, then radioed for assistance from Sheboygan County Sheriff’s deputies as the car neared the Sheboygan County line. At least two Sheboygan County deputies picked up the pursuit at County Road MM, in the Town of Mosel.
A criminal complaint filed in Sheboygan County court says that the driver of the Chrysler was pulled over near mile marker 33, but as deputies approached the vehicle, the driver took off again - leading officers on a nine mile, high-speed chase down I-43.
Finally, deputies were able to end the chase by using spike strips to deflate the tires on the stolen vehicle, near County Road PP. That’s where a foot pursuit began as deputies allege Robinson exited the vehicle and took off running down an embankment. According to the criminal complaint one deputy deployed his taser and Robinson was taken into custody.
When interviewed at the Sheboygan County Detention Center following the chase, Robinson stated that he thought he was being pulled over for a routine traffic stop in the initial encounter with Sheboygan County deputies. Robinson says that he took off when he saw the deputies, “pull out their guns,” as they approached the vehicle.
Robinson also denies having knowledge that the Chrysler Aspen was reported stolen.
He is facing a felony count of attempting to elude a traffic officer. He could face a sentencing of up to 3 ½ years in prison plus fines of up to $10,000, if convicted.
