SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The alleged driver of a vehicle that damaged the Eighth Street Bridge in Sheboygan was arrested Sunday.

Sheboygan Police Sergeant Joel Kuszynski tells WHBL News the 22 year old Sheboygan man fled the scene after the accident, but was found and is facing charges.

Kuszynski says the vehicle was speeding around the roundabout at South Eighth Street and Indiana Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night when it lost control, and struck a barricade arm on the bridge.

The owner of the vehicle, a 21 year old Sheboygan man, was a passenger at the time of the accident and was treated for minor injuries.

The bridge is open for vehicle traffic, but the damage from the accident is preventing it from opening.

This will keep certain large and tall boats from traveling on the Sheboygan River since they would need the bridge to open to pass it.

The Sheboygan Public Works Department is working to fix the bridge malfunction.  No word when it will be resolved.
