TOWN OF MOSEL, WI (WHBL) - Tuesday’s picture perfect weather brought out thousands to Whistling Straits for day two of the PGA Championship. As players continued their preparation for the last major of the year, spectators were treated to a long drive contest on the second hole.
Getting a front row seat were members of Sheboygan County’s five PGA Junior League teams. The teams, which were formed three years ago in the area, consist of kids ages 13 and under.
Quit Qui Oc team assistant Rachel Montaba says this format help the young golfers learn the game in a team setting. "So it isn’t all on their shoulders. They get to play with another partner, plus it’s a team atmosphere which is really different from anything else that we’ve done."
Each team represents a golf course in the county, and compete against one another in a series of two-team scramble match play events. Team members are allowed to make things easier if they want, such as improving lies or moving balls, as being a part of the team is more than just improving on one's golf game.
Blackwolf Run Team Coach Michael Aschenbach tells WHBL News one aspect is etiquette on the course, which can also be used in real life. "We work on simple things like introducing yourself in the beginning of a match, taking your hat off, smiling. You know, just a lot of core values; respecting one another, respecting your teammates, (and) spectators."
It has been a busy past few months for team members. They got the chance to take part in special clinics leading up to the tournament, including a visit with PGA Junior League Golf Ambassador Rory Mcilroy. So far this week, the players have had a chance to play golf at the Irish Course next to the Straits Course, take lessons, and meet some of golf's best.
