SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - The recent numbers from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development showed unemployment rates increased in May in Sheboygan County.
Department Economist Jeff Sachse tells WHBL News the reason for the increase was due to the annual increase of people looking for work, courtesy of recent college grads and students searching for summer jobs.
But most of these people may not be able to fill the need major manufacturers need to fill.
Steve Waller of QPS Employment Group echoes what has been said for some time by Sheboygan County business and government leaders, that a skills gap is forming. "People in the skilled industry are aging and retiring, and there’s just not enough people coming up through the ranks to be able to fill that; so that has made a real challenge for a lot of companies in the area."
Waller says his group is trying to address this by working with area schools to get students interested in jobs that opening up at area manufacturers.
