ELKHART LAKE, WI (WHBL) - Folks heading out to watch motorcycle racing at Road America this weekend will have a chance to learn more about everyday motorcycle safety.

The Wisconsin DOT will have their Transportation High-End Rider Education Facility, known as the REF, at the legendary track through Sunday.

Ken Edwardson says the 40 foot trailer has been modified into an interactive learning center for motorcycles.  "We have a number of TVs showing different safety videos for motorcycles," says Edwardson.  "We also have the SMARTrainer."  The SMARTrainer gives a person a real-world experience riding in traffic and on public roads either on a motorcycle or a scooter.

Edwardson says this one of a kind portable classroom can help non-riders and riders improve safety on the road.  "We know that 80-percent of the motorcyclists in Wisconsin have never taken a formal screening course of any kind," says Edwardson.  "So if we can get them in, if they’ll spend a few minutes (and) if they learn one thing about motorcycle safety, we’ve done our job."

The REF will be open to the public Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  More information from the DOT on this trailer can be found by clicking the link below.
