PLYMOUTH, WI (WHBL) - On Wednesday evening local bicyclists can take part in an international observance for their rights on the road. Plymouth is one of several hundred locations worldwide where a Ride of Silence event will be held.
Local organizer Dan Shiley says it began in Texas in 2003 when an endurance cyclist died after being hit by the mirror of a passing bus. "From then on it’s been in memory of cyclists who have lost their lives in collisions with vehicles," says Shiley. "Not only that but to raise awareness of cyclists and their rights on the road."
Shiley had his own experience being hit by a vehicle while bicycling a few years ago. Though is was not that serious, it was enough for him to look for a way to bring attention to this potential danger. He began the Plymouth observance for Ride of Silence two years ago, and has had just over a dozen riders take part both years.
Shiley said bicyclists will be taking an eight mile loop in and around Plymouth starting at 7 p.m. at Back Door Bike Shop.
Anyone who comes to ride in this free event is required to wear a helmet, follow the law when cycling, and remain silent.
