SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - As of now, no new private schools in Sheboygan County will join the state’s voucher program.

The Department of Public Instruction announced Thursday that 35 of 90 private schools will be part of the Parental Choice Program next school year.  25 of them were selected since they had the highest number of students applying for vouchers in that school.  The other ten were kept on since they were part of the program this school year.

Five of the schools are from Sheboygan County, and remained on since they were part of the program this year.  They include St. Paul Lutheran School in Sheboygan, Sheboygan Area Lutheran High School, St. John Lutheran in Plymouth, Sheboygan Christian School, and Trinity Lutheran School in Sheboygan.  Because of their status, they will not receive additional vouchers than they received this school year.

Four other school did apply for the first time to accept voucher students, but they did not have enough applications to join the program.  These were Bethleham Lutheran School in Sheboygan, Immanuel Lutheran School in Sheboygan, Oostburg Christian School, and Sheboygan County Christian High School.

All this could change in the upcoming weeks.  Currently, the Department of Public Instruction is running the program under the one-thousand voucher limit set when the program was expanded statewide a few years ago.  A repeal of the voucher limit is part of the state budget proposal.
