Sheboygan, WI (WHBL) – There is no shortage of reasons to explain why more Sheboygan area women appear to be showing interests in guns, and firearms training. Sheboygan County Sheriff Todd Priebe tells WHBL News that in some cases, it’s a matter of female merchants who wish to protect their businesses, but in more cases, he believes women are arming themselves as a matter of personal security. “I think that women feel more vulnerable, and this now is an alternative for some women to feel a little bit more secure or safe - whether it’s in their home or maybe in situations where they are involved in a business that requires them to transport large amounts of money,” Priebe says.
Vicky Wiese is a Range Safety Officer, and a certified basic pistol instructor at the Sheboygan Rifle and Pistol Club. She says that facility has seen a sharp increase in the number of women enrolled in firearms training classes, in sharp contrast to pevious years when classes were predominately male.
Wiese says, “We’re seeing an increase regarding women coming to our classes. We have; basic pistol classes, personal protection inside the home, personal protection outside the home. We have different events like bull’s-eye shooting, and different types of activities where close to about fifty percent of women are in these classes.”
The organization will host its 7th annual “Women on Target “event on May 16th. The event is designed to help women become more acclimated with firearms, and proper use.
