SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Considering the Sheboygan Armory as a “preferred preserved significant building” has one organization playing the waiting game.
The Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan, better known as SEAS, is waiting out a 90 day period that prevents the City of Sheboygan to act on their plan to demolish the Sheboygan Armory. Chairman Leslie Kohler says they are disappointed, given that any other plans to save the structure have not come forward. "You might be able to come up with the money to save it, but then you’ve got to have money for the ongoing maintenance of it, and meanwhile what’s the purpose of it," says Kohler. "What are you going to use it for?"
SEAS wants to build a new structure where the Armory stands, and Kohler says they will make the most of this delay by getting the word out about their proposed plans. "That we’re actually providing an opportunity for the rest of the community to become involved in learning how to boat, whether it’s sailing or power boating; offering boats for rent if people don’t have boats," says Kohler.
If the city does find a different use for the Armory and the land, Kohler says SEAS will look elsewhere to build a new building.
