SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - As the flu season reaches its peak and remains at epidemic levels nationwide, flu cases in Sheboygan County are not as high when it comes to children.

The Sheboygan Area School District says they did see a spike in illnesses keeping kids out of school in December but, thanks to the Winter break for the Christmas and New Year's holidays, absences for flu are not as high as they are elsewhere in the state.

Karlyn Raddatz, Health Officer with the Sheboygan County Department of Health and Human Services, says the noro virus is causing just as many illnesses for school age children as the flu.  Known by many as the "Stomach bug" or "Stomach Flu", it has symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping.

Raddatz says the best defense against the noro virus is simple - make sure you wash your hands properly every time you do so.
