SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan’s garbage fee is closer to a possible extension. The city council, meeting as a Committee of the Whole Tuesday evening, voted 10 to 4 to recommend extending the fee through 2018.
The fee is scheduled to expire at the end of this year, but it would cut revenues by over $800,000 and be the main factor in a million dollar budget shortfall next year. Those in favor of the fee said it needs to stay so the city does not have to cut other services to compensate. Other suggested it should be rolled into the city’s tax levy either all at once or gradually over time.
Council President Don Hammond said no matter what decision is made, it will not be easy since something will have to give - either with continuing the fee or finding ways to cover the revenue shortfall.
The full council will make the official decision in an upcoming meeting.
