SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The City of Sheboygan is supporting efforts to create a national marine sanctuary along its Lake Michigan shoreline.  On Sheboygan’s Morning News Tuesday, Mayor Mike Vandersteen said the Common Council approved a resolution this week that would allow the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration preserve shipwrecked vessels from the past.

Vandersteen said the purpose of the sanctuary would be to make sure the at least 33 ships found off the Lake Michigan shore between Two Rivers and Port Washington are not interfered with by other ships from above.  A sanctuary designation could also lead to more wrecks being discovered.

Vandersteen said there are other locations across the country trying to earn this designation, and the one for Lake Michigan will not be decided on for another few years.
